Best Shopify themes in 2026: free and paid options compared

The right Shopify theme depends on your product type, design requirements, and budget. This is an honest breakdown of the themes worth considering - not a sponsored list.

Shopify has over 100 themes in its store. Most aren't worth your time. The ones worth considering form a much shorter list - and the right choice depends on your product category, catalogue size, and how much visual customisation you need.

Free Shopify themes worth using

Dawn - the best free theme for most stores. Shopify's flagship free theme since Online Store 2.0. Clean, minimal, fast - consistently scores 90+ on Lighthouse Performance with no extra optimisation. Genuinely flexible section library, well-maintained by Shopify, and the baseline that most Shopify developers know intimately. If you're not sure which free theme to pick, pick Dawn.

Best for: any product category, especially stores that want a clean professional look without visual complexity.

Craft - for handmade, artisan, and independent brands. A warmer, more textured aesthetic than Dawn. Better default typography for brands with a craft or provenance story. Still fast and well-built. A good choice for jewellery, ceramics, food, or any brand where the handmade story matters.

Best for: artisan products, food and beverage, independent makers.

Sense - for beauty, wellness, and skincare. Clean editorial aesthetic that works particularly well for beauty and skincare brands. Good ingredient/benefit-focused layout options. Lighter and more approachable than Dawn's minimal corporate feel.

Best for: skincare, beauty, wellness, supplements.

Refresh - for lifestyle and D2C brands. More energy than Dawn, better for brands with strong lifestyle photography. Product page layout emphasises imagery. Good for apparel, accessories, and any brand where the lifestyle context matters as much as the product.

Best for: apparel, lifestyle brands, accessories.

Paid Shopify themes worth buying

Impulse ($380) - the best all-round paid theme. The most popular paid Shopify theme for good reason. Strong section library, good performance, excellent mobile UX, and genuinely flexible for customisation. Well-maintained by Archetype Themes. Works for almost any product category. If you're going to spend money on a theme without knowing exactly which one, Impulse is the safest bet.

Best for: mid-to-high-end D2C, fashion, home goods, any brand that needs visual flexibility.

Prestige ($380) - for premium and luxury brands. Editorial aesthetic built for high-end positioning. Better hero section options than Impulse, stronger typography, more film-like product presentation. Slower than Impulse but still respectable performance. Worth it for brands where premium perception is the primary goal.

Best for: luxury fashion, high-end beauty, premium homeware, jewellery.

Symmetry ($320) - for large catalogues. Built specifically for stores with many products and collection hierarchies. Superior filtering and sorting UI, strong collection page with multiple layout options, good mega-menu for complex navigation. Less visually distinctive than Prestige but more functional for large catalogues.

Best for: stores with 200+ products, multi-category catalogues, B2C electronics and technical products.

Pipeline ($320) - for fashion and apparel. Strong lookbook and campaign page capabilities, good storytelling layout options, well-suited to clothing brands with editorial photography. The product page has good variant presentation for colour-heavy apparel.

Best for: fashion, apparel, footwear, accessories.

Motion ($360) - for brands with video content. Built around video as a primary content type - video backgrounds, video sections, animated elements. Best for brands with strong video assets. Don't buy this if you don't have video content to populate it with; the default sections with placeholder content look unfinished.

Best for: sports, fitness, lifestyle brands with video production.

What to look for when evaluating a theme

PageSpeed score. Check the theme's demo store in Google PageSpeed Insights before buying. A theme scoring below 60 on mobile will hurt your conversion rate and search rankings. Most premium paid themes score 70-85. Dawn and the newer free themes score 85-95.

Section library breadth. How many unique section types does the theme include? A theme with 15 section types gives you more flexibility to build different page layouts than one with 8. Check the theme's documentation or demo to count.

Update history. Check when the theme was last updated on the Shopify Theme Store. Themes that haven't been updated in 12+ months are accumulating compatibility debt with each Shopify platform update.

Support responsiveness. Read recent reviews specifically mentioning support. A beautiful theme with non-existent support is a liability when something breaks.

When to skip themes entirely and build custom

No off-the-shelf theme is the right answer when:

  • Your brand has a genuinely distinctive visual identity that no theme can match without extensive reworking
  • You need section types or interactions that don't exist in any available theme
  • You're building a complex product configurator, subscription flow, or custom checkout experience
  • The effort to adapt a paid theme to your requirements exceeds the cost of building from scratch

A custom Shopify theme built from a Figma design starts from $3,000 for a focused build. If you're spending $380 on a theme and then $2,000+ on customisation to make it look nothing like the original, you've probably spent more than a clean custom build would have cost.

The practical test: if you can point to a paid theme and say "I want to look like this," a theme with customisation is the right answer. If you can't find a theme that's even close to what you want, custom is worth scoping.
