Shopify is a hosted ecommerce platform that lets you build an online store, accept payments, manage inventory, and ship to customers — without owning any servers or writing code. You pay a monthly subscription and Shopify handles the technical infrastructure. Your job is running the business.
How Shopify works
When you sign up for Shopify, you get:
- An online store hosted on Shopify's servers (yourstore.myshopify.com, or your own domain)
- A theme — the visual design of your store — which you can customise through a drag-and-drop editor
- A product catalogue where you add your products, prices, and images
- A payment processor to accept cards from customers
- An order management system to track and fulfil orders
- An app store with 8,000+ add-ons for email marketing, reviews, subscriptions, and more
Customers find your store through Google, social media, or direct links. They browse your products, add to cart, and pay through Shopify's checkout. You receive notification of the order and ship it. Shopify pays out your revenue (minus fees) to your UK bank account.
Shopify pricing in the UK (GBP)
Shopify charges in USD but bills to UK credit/debit cards in GBP at the prevailing exchange rate. Approximate UK costs at current rates:
- Basic: approximately £23/month (billed monthly) or £17/month (annual)
- Shopify: approximately £62/month or £47/month annual
- Advanced: approximately £235/month or £176/month annual
- Shopify Plus: from approximately £1,800/month
Most UK businesses starting out choose the Basic plan. For the full breakdown of which plan is right for your revenue stage, see the Shopify pricing guide.
Shopify Payments in the UK
Shopify Payments is Shopify's built-in payment processor, available to UK businesses. It's the recommended payment option because:
- No additional platform transaction fees (Shopify charges 2% per transaction if you use any other gateway)
- Payments go directly to your UK bank account in GBP
- Shop Pay is activated — Shopify's one-tap checkout used by millions of UK shoppers
- Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Klarna are all available through Shopify Payments
UK credit card processing rates with Shopify Payments on Basic: 1.7% for UK cards. International cards are slightly higher. There are no monthly fees beyond the Shopify plan itself.
UK-specific considerations
VAT. Shopify does not automatically handle UK VAT compliance. You configure tax rates in Settings - Taxes. For UK stores, enable tax collection on UK orders at 20% standard rate (or reduced rates where applicable). If you're VAT registered, your accountant or a tax compliance tool (TaxJar, Avalara) helps ensure accuracy. If you're not VAT registered, you still need to understand when registration becomes mandatory (currently £90,000 annual taxable turnover threshold).
UK shipping carriers. Shopify integrates with Royal Mail, DPD, Parcelforce, Hermes (now Evri), and most major UK carriers via apps. The built-in calculated shipping pulls real-time rates. For high-volume shipping, apps like Shipbob (UK-based) or Sendcloud connect you to discounted carrier rates.
GDPR compliance. UK GDPR applies to all UK online stores collecting customer data. Shopify's privacy policy template, cookie consent, and data handling are designed to be GDPR-compatible but you're responsible for ensuring your specific use of customer data complies. Add a cookie consent banner (available via free apps) and review your privacy policy before launch.
Returns. UK consumers have statutory rights including a 14-day right to cancel distance selling contracts under the Consumer Contracts Regulations. Your returns policy must meet these minimum requirements regardless of what you state in your Shopify returns policy. Shopify's returns policy template is a starting point — have it reviewed for UK legal compliance.
Company information. UK businesses selling online are required to display their company name, registered address, and company number if incorporated. Add these to your Shopify footer or about page.
UK success with Shopify
Shopify powers thousands of UK brands across every category — from independent makers selling through Etsy-style stores to established retailers doing millions in revenue. Brands like Gymshark (founded in Birmingham) built their early ecommerce presence on Shopify before moving to Shopify Plus. The platform scales from a one-person operation to a £50M+ business.
